Spent last weekend running through the straights and turns of the Mid America Motorplex in Council Bluffs Iowa (just outside Omaha, NE).

First time ever on a road course and it was a blast!  Did find out however it requires a different level of preparation compared to Auto-X or Drag Racing as the brakes get SEVERELY used.  I ended up warping a rotor (that later cracked) and boiled the stock brake fluid (causing the pedal to dip to the floor... not good trying to brake at the end of a 100+ mph straight away).

Here's a video of the fun from outside the car...

And from the front bumper

Fun at the Amery Airport Autocross ! PDF Print E-mail

Saturday was my first attempt in the 04 Cobra at a real auto-cross event.  The venue was the Amery Airport in Amery Wisconsin.  This is a unique course in that after the typical weaves and twisties of the Auto-cross itself, the final corner opens up onto a 1/3 mile straight away for a High Speed run.  Talk about a situation absolutely built for these cars.

Here is a video of my final run of the day, it was my best time (34.72) on the auto-cross but I clipped a couple cones just enough to tip them over causing 4 seconds in penalties (2 per cone).

Best speed on the straight away was my 2nd run at 123mph.

This event was BY FAR the most fun I've had at an event with my cobra, I put it way up above drag racing.  Will be interesting later this summer if I have the same feeling after being on the road course at Mid America Motorplex.

2009 Car Craft Summer Nationals PDF Print E-mail

Well, the Orange Beastie made its appears at the Car Craft Magazine Summer Nationals on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds this past weekend.  This year was a bit more exciting as I was competing in the Real Street Eliminator competition.  Did pretty good on the dyno (444hp), the auto-cross (11.804 seconds) and the launch/stop box (5.1 seconds).  Not sure where I stand overall, as the Magazine Editor elected to NOT announce a winner.

Here is a picture from the auto-cross event

There was MUCH controversy over the fact that the Car Craft personnel elected to add at least 3 (some say 4) ADDITIONAL CARS to our class, expanding the field from the agreed upon 6 to now 9 (or 10 depending on who you talk to).

Normally, this wouldn't have caused much of a stir, but they made a big deal about the pre-selection process, and being ONE OF the 6 selected vehicles.  Then all of a sudden on the FIRST DAY OF THE SHOW they add in more cars.

And the controversy doesn't end there, one of the cars added was a C4 corvette completely outfitted for racing, including SLICKS as tires (aka... not street legal).  For some reason this was allowed.  Issue #2, a late model black Vette (not sure of the year or body style) was added, with Nitrous in the hatch... again, not street legal... but it was allowed to run.  These 2 cars finished 1 / 2, or possibly 1 / 3 in the standings.  All depends on how the 09 Viper SRT-10 (also in my class) did in the Launch/Stop box, and how the Vettes did on the dyno (I didn't see their dyno runs).

Anyway, it was a fun competition, but when the heavy hitters like that show up, feel like I brought a stick to a gun fight.

We'll see I guess.

The really cool news, is I was interviewed by an online magazine, they often appear on cable TVs SPEED channel as well... V8TV

If I get wind of when it's airing (if it does), I'll post up.  The guy that was doing the video-taping is the guy that normally hosts the show, and he was ALL OVER my car with video... so... again... we'll see.

Thanks to Dan Neinstadt for helping out on the rotor and brake pad upgrade on the cobra.  We installed Kinetics cross drilled and slotted rotors and Evolution Performance PowerStop ceramic brake pads on all 4 corners of the snake.  This should help out immensely in the auto-cross and launch box events at Car Craft Summer Nationals this weekend!

Coolings Mods are DONE! PDF Print E-mail

Here is the before with the stock heat exchanger                               And the final result

Also added in a new "ice tank" for use at the race track, and a new Radiator Overflow tank to balance out the underhood look.  The tanks came in raw-metal format, and I had Curt Kangas of Kangas Enameling do a color matching orange powdercoat on them.  Turned out VERY nice.

Just have to work on eliminating any air from the coolant system a little at a time over the next couple days, and we are good to go.  I still want to totally flush the engine cooling system, but that may have to wait until next week.
